Year 1 – Week 2 at Forest School

Wednesday 13th January 2016

This week the grounds men came to prune some of our trees at school. As wood is very scarce in our Forest School at the moment we grabbed the chance to collect as many branches as we could. The children were brilliant at clearing the area and dragging the branches safely into place.

We had lots of fun learning a new game called ‘Giants, Dwarves and Wizards’. This is a gross motor team version of the popular Rock, Paper and Scissors game, and after a little practice of the actions we were soon following the rules and learning about negotiation, cooperation and teamwork.

Back in our outdoor classroom the children were told about a very special tree that belonged to a wizard. The tree however, was no longer needed and had been chopped down! Luckily though ‘Explorer Ted’ had managed to salvage some of the wood and had delivered it to Shobnall Forest School for our children to make into special wands. Thank you Explorer Ted!

Working with a partner the children wrote out spells and created their own magical wands.

Whilst enjoying our hot chocolate and biscuit this week, we shared some of the spells we had created… I think the spell for cleaning wellington boots and clothing would be a very popular spell at the moment! Well done children, your wands look amazing!
