All about Forest School by Jude and Aaron

Forest School is great! Before we get into the fun stuff, we have to put our bags down on the benches in the outdoor classroom and we gather on the field for a game. After that, we do all sorts of fun activities, such as making charcoal, sketching and using sheath knives. We also had the chance to build dens. Towards the end, we are called over to the campfire where we are given hot chocolate and a biscuit. Then we gather our things together ready for home time.

Forest Schools Introduction by Jay, James and Charlie

Forest Schools is a place where children learn about wildlife and doing things including fire lighting, wood carving and charcoal drawings. We also have some free time where we build dens and have fun. We wear old clothes because we might get muddy. Also, we sit round a fire pit and eat biscuits and drink hot chocolate at the end of each session and we then sing a song. Read on to find out what sorts of things we have done this week:

Trust Test by Trinity and Demi

This week in Forest School, we did a trust test and we chose a partner who we could reply on. Then we were given a blindfold and we had to put it on and our partner took us to a nice place, which we had to describe. Next, we swapped over and did the same. For example, we went to the pond and to the dens.

Trust Game By Heather

At Forest School, we started out by playing a trust game with blindfolds. One person could not see while their partners guide them somewhere they think is nice. The person then lifts the blindfold off their face and describes what they see. We then gathered around the fire pit and discussed if we felt safe. I did.

Forest School Blog on the Trust Game by Safa A

This blog is about the trust game. We played this game at the start of the lesson and I found it very fun. This game was about trust and we were in partners. One of use was blindfolded. The partners that was not blindfolded had to guide the other person to a place they liked. We had to take our blindfolds off and describe the place. We took it in turns doing this and when we finished, we knew we had our partner’s trust.

Forest School Charcoal Pictures by Thomas

Last Wednesday at Forest School, we got some wood (willow) and put it into a tin with a hole in. We burnt it over the firs and it turned into charcoal. This Wednesday, we drew pictures using the charcoal we had made last week. I drew a picture of the fire onto a piece of paper. It was a bit difficult to draw with but I enjoyed it!

Charcoal by Olivia and Natalia

In Forest School, we make fire and dens. We also make charcoal and char-cloth. We sketched with the charcoal and Olivia did a beautiful charcoal sketch.

Forest School Blog on Charcoal by Charli

This blog is about charcoal. We made it with Mrs Farrington. She got some small sticks and burnt it on the fire in a tin. After a while, it turned to charcoal which we used to draw pictures of forest things and objects.

Char-cloth and Charcoal by Clarkson

To make char-cloth, you needs fabric which is 100% cotton. First, you put it in a tin and put it over the fire and then it will become char-cloth. If you use fabric which isn’t 100% cotton, it will burn. We also made charcoal using sticks of willow. We used this to draw wonderful pictures. I drew a boy playing in a tree. Other people drew wildlife and other things.

Pixie Pillows by Keira

At Forest School, we had a go at lighting fires with flint and steel. First of all, we got a pixie pillow and we used the flint and steel to set it on fire. This was my best experience ever! Forest School is so much fun!

Forest Schools by Kynan

Forest Schools is where you can build dens and take part in various activities, such as lighting forest, tying and advanced knot and spotting dangers to the environment. Also at Forest School, there is an outdoor classroom where you can do some work. It is really good because you can get covered in mud and not be told off for it! At the start, we always play a game where we have to work as a team to win. All this happens every Wednesday. On week 1, we played a game similar to rock, paper, scissors and week 2, we had to collect pinecones from the centre of a square and whichever team collects the last pinecone wins. This week in Forest Schools, we had a go at whittling, which is where you take a knife and cut bits off the end of a stick. When you have a point on the end of a stick, you can put a marshmallow on the end and you can toast it over a fire.

Wood Whittling by Tara and Freya

At Forest School, we have been doing whittling with potato peelers first and then with sheath knives. We used potato peelers to peel the bark off some alive, green wood. Then we used the knives to take off some of the slivers of wood to make the stick sharp so that we can toast marshmallows. After we did our activity, we gathered around the fire circle for a sing song and hot chocolate!

Forest Schools by Laila

Forest Schools is all about learning to play and communicate well with your friends. We made charcoal in our last session and used it to do drawings. It was lots of fun!
