Year 4 Forest School Blog – Weeks 1, 2 & 3

Week 1 (8.11.16)

The first week of Forest School for the Year 4s saw the class familiarise themselves with the area and explore how it had changed since their last visit. The class were given the task of collecting a variety of materials together so that they could then turn them into a piece of natural art. The children also took advantage of some of the left over pumpkins from Halloween to add some colour to their creations. The session finished with a story that involved the children moving around the Forest School area whenever they heard a certain word and then a good old sing song!

Week 2 (15.11.16)

This week saw Year 4 playing a vital role in the upkeep and development of the Forest School area. A delivery of around 100 saplings required a large group of willing and able volunteers to plant them and Year 4 were up to the job! Split up into pairs the children explored the area and decided where the saplings would enjoy living the most and then used trowels and forks to dig a hole deep enough to give the sapling a good start to life. The hard work will continue next week as there are still many more to plant!

Week 3 (22.11.16)

Sadly, due to Mrs Howell being required in Year 3 for the day, the class were unable to have their Forest School session in the Forest School Area. However, this didn’t stop us enjoying some craft and art related activities in the classroom. The children had to pair up and wind lengths of thread until they had become tight and springy. They then used this thread to create a necklace with a cutting of wood, which they had designed themselves. The children left at the end of the day sporting some very impressive items of natural jewellery!
