Year 1 explore our new Forest School

Wednesday 6th January 2016

Our Year 1 children were the first class to experience our new on site Forest School, and were very excited as they made their way across the school field to find out what was behind the tall wooden fence at the bottom.

The children were soon in the Forest School spirit and began with their own risk assessment of the area to ensure that everyone remained safe during our session. One of our major risks was the copious amount of mud we soon began churning up!

Mrs. Farrington told the children that our Forest School was a very magical place and explained how earlier she had found a strange looking bottle filled with some kind of potion…Pixie Juice! On it was a label, which informed the children how to make Pixie Nectar;

  1. Collect 6 things from nature.
  2. Add a drop of Pixie Juice.
  3. Stir it with a stick, longer than your hand.
  4. Give it a name and make a wish!

The children soon went off, working in pairs searching for their special ingredients.

We then sat around the fire circle and reported back what we created. Some of our potion names included Griffin, Rainbow Magic, Sparkles and Storm! We never shared our wishes, but we hope they come true!

Before we had drink and a snack we had time for a game of ‘Bird Song orchestra’. In groups we each had a bird with a different bird song and built up a bird song dawn chorus from a very quiet start to all the groups chanting their song. It certainly got the attention of some nearby birds as they were seen flying over our heads!

We reviewed our session with a Forest School reflection song as we sat drinking our hot chocolate and munching on our biscuit. With big smiles on our faces and covered in mud we headed back to school. We can’t wait for next week!
