A partner academy in the John Taylor MAT

Year 1 – Week 4 at Forest School

Wednesday 27th January 2016

This week our session began with a lively game of ‘Squirrels in a tree’, where children scamper around like little squirrels but have to listen carefully for the owl swooping down! Very quickly, in pairs they make a tree to house a given number of squirrels. Cooperative learning was high on the agenda as well as problem solving, especially when four squirrels had to hide in the tree!

Next the children worked with a partner to track down hidden dragons in Forest School. This stimulated lots of discussion about colour and how the red and blue dragons were easier to find than the green and orange dragons as they were more ‘camouflaged’.

Taking our dragon theme a step further, the children worked in self chosen groups to create a home for the dragons that reside at Forest School! Each group chose their location and sourced their own natural materials from around the area. It was truly wonderful to see all the children busily creating their homes, discussing how to build them, creating cosy bedrooms, gardens to play in and food for them to eat! Your finished dragon homes were incredible, well done to you all!

Oh…and let’s not forget the mud, mud, glorious mud!!!!

The ground on the slope became that slippery this week that children were slipping over like skittles! Again however, it proved to be a valuable learning experience as children worked together to find ways of helping each other to climb back up. While others were using it to stick their logs together to make their dragon homes stronger and taller and sandwiching logs together to create dragon food. Great imagination!
