Year 3 Forest School Week 1

Year 3: Forest School Session – 20.4.21

Year 3 have really enjoyed their first forest school session this week. The session started with a game of heads and tails. The children had to predict whether a coin would land on heads or tails by putting their hands on their head or their hands on their bottom. This game was a lot of fun!

During the next few weeks, the children will complete a selection of activities. Many of these activities are based on our ‘Iron Man’ topic.

This week, one group were creating beads from the branches of an Elder tree. The children used secateurs to cut a small piece of branch to create a bead. These branches have a pulp-like centre which is easy to push out using a skewer. Once the centre had been pushed out, the children could thread these onto a string to create a necklace or bracelet. Some of the children decided to peel away the bark on some of their beads to create pretty patterns. This group also did some weaving. The children found a range of sticks and foliage and the wove these onto the large and small templates.

Another group were creating Iron Age round houses using a range of materials. The children were asked to make several houses to create a settlement. They were then tasked with making the settlement secure. The children were able to get very creative when doing this. We were so impressed!

The session ended with hot chocolate, a biscuit and a song. We had such a lovely time and it was great to see the children working together and helping each other with the activities. We are already looking forward to next week!
