Year 3 Session 2

Wednesday 2nd March 2016

A fun game of ‘Earth, Air or Water’ began this week’s Forest School session. Children worked in smaller groups and when a ball was thrown to them, had to think of a creature that lives (or spends a lot of its time) in either the earth, air or water. Children’s knowledge about different fauna and their habitats was certainly put to the test, and as a result of limited knowledge about creatures that live in the earth, children were given the challenge to carry out their own research to extend their knowledge. We look forward to learning from each other next week!

The children then listened to a tool talk for using loppers as Mrs. Farrington demonstrated the safe use of this tool before children practiced using them for themselves.

We began making our own beads using twigs from the elder tree. Elder is thought to be a magical tree, in fact Harry Potter’s wand is made of elder with a phoenix feather core. Before you cut the elder tree it is polite to ask the tree if you may take its branches, so Mrs. Farrington talked to a lot of trees over the weekend to source the required wood!

Children worked with great care to cut their own elder beads and using a tent peg pushed out the pith from the middle of the bead which is soft and spongy, before peeling off the bark…next week the beads will be decorated and threaded.
