Week 2 at Forest School for Reception Class

Wednesday 29th June 2016

Kitted out in our waterproof gear, we all set off to Forest School. To get us warmed up we played a lively game called ‘Hey Mister Crocodile’, where children were allowed to cross the river if they were wearing a certain colour or they had to swim across the river, trying not to get caught by Mister Crocodile! After the game we all shook hands and congratulated each other on a good effort.

This week the children were desperate to find Explorer Ted and find out what he had in his special bag. After a lot of searching, he was found hiding amongst the leaves, high up in a tree! Inside his bag was a toy swallow, which made a swallow birdcall, which the children were fascinated to hear.

We then read a story about a swallow and a blackbird, called ‘Follow the Swallow’, and discussed the differences between the two birds. The children were then placed into small groups and given a toy bird, were given the challenge to build a nest that was practical and comfortable. The children loved collecting twigs, leaves, grass and mud and worked with enthusiasm and showed great co-operation throughout.

Here are our finished nests…

‘Where is bird?’ was our final game of the morning. This game required us to listen carefully to who was holding the tweeting bird behind their back, which proved to be a difficult task with the pouring rain bouncing off our hoods! But still, children’s spirits remained high throughout!

To finish our session we sang an action song called ‘Boom chicka boom’, and of course had our very welcome drink of hot chocolate. Although it rained throughout the morning, the children had a thoroughly enjoyable session and it was lovely to hear them say on the way back up to school, “That was the best Forest School session ever!”

We can’t wait for next week, no matter what the weather!
